Overview

UVIVE is a mobile application designed to help people monitor indoor air quality through real-time environmental data. Connected to smart sensors, the app transforms complex air quality metrics into clear, actionable insights, enabling users to create healthier living and working environments.

The Problem

Most people are unaware of the quality of the air they breathe indoors. While sensors collect valuable environmental data, presenting that information in a meaningful and understandable way is a challenge.

The goal wasn't simply to display numbers — it was to help users quickly understand what those numbers meant and what actions they should take.

The Goal

The project focused on creating an experience that could:

My Role

As the Product Designer, I was responsible for designing the complete mobile experience from research through final UI.

Responsibilities

Understanding the Users

The primary users included homeowners, families, and individuals who wanted greater visibility into the quality of their indoor environment without needing technical knowledge.

Research revealed that users cared less about raw sensor values and more about simple answers:

These questions became the foundation of the product experience.

Design Challenges

01
Making Data Human
Environmental metrics such as particulate matter, humidity, and temperature needed to feel approachable instead of technical.
02
Prioritizing What Matters
Users should immediately recognize whether conditions are healthy before exploring detailed analytics.
03
Creating Trust
Because the application supports health-related decisions, clarity, consistency, and transparency became essential design principles.
04
Balancing Simplicity with Depth
The interface needed to satisfy first-time users while still offering meaningful insights for advanced users.

Design Strategy

Every design decision was guided by four principles.

Clarity First
Translate technical sensor readings into simple, visual health indicators.
Information at a Glance
Enable users to understand indoor conditions within seconds through clear hierarchy and visual cues.
Actionable Insights
Pair every important metric with practical recommendations instead of simply presenting data.
Consistency Across the Experience
Establish reusable patterns and components to support future features while maintaining familiarity.

Information Architecture

The application was structured around the user's daily journey:

This organization ensured users could move naturally from awareness to action.

Key Features

Real-Time Dashboard — A central dashboard displaying live air quality, temperature, humidity, and environmental conditions.

Historical Trends — Interactive visualizations helping users understand how air quality changes throughout the day.

Smart Notifications — Timely alerts notifying users when environmental conditions require attention.

Device Management — Simple onboarding and management of connected air quality sensors.

Personalized Insights — Clear recommendations designed to help users improve indoor environments through small, actionable changes.

Design System

To create a cohesive experience across the application, I developed a scalable design system including:

The design system ensured consistency while accelerating future product development.

Outcomes

The final product transformed complex environmental monitoring into a clean, approachable mobile experience. The redesign focused on:

What I Learned

Designing UVIVE reinforced an important lesson: people don't want data — they want understanding.

The most valuable design decisions weren't about adding more information, but about helping users confidently interpret environmental conditions and take meaningful action.
